All subpages on maw.best are variations of fediverse services designed to appeal to specific user groups. For example, Pixelfed is an image-sharing website similar to Instagram, but it can also be used to share painted art. The Pixelfur alternative hosted on maw.best is specifically for artists.
🧵 Concept
All these platforms are connected through something called the fediverse — think of it like a big network of social media sites that can talk to each other. The best part is, you don’t need to sign up for every single site separately. If you make an account on one of them, people using any of the connected sites can still follow you, see your posts, and interact with you.
📜 List of Services
🎨 Digital and Traditional Artists - Pixelfur - Pixelfed
Pixelfur is a Pixelfed-based platform where artists can upload and share their digital or traditional creations. It’s a community space to showcase your work, connect with other creatives, and build your portfolio. Whether you’re posting quick sketches, polished illustrations, or traditional paintings, Pixelfur gives you the tools to present your art in collections.
🎵 Musicians - Sonic Orca - Funkwhale
Sonic Orca is a place for musicians to share their tracks, performances, and experiments with sound. It helps you reach listeners who appreciate diverse genres and original music, from polished studio albums to raw live recordings.
🦡 Hobbyists and Tinkerers - Hoarding Badger - Flohmarkt
Hoarding Badger lets makers upload, display, and sell their handmade crafts. From unique art pieces to inventive DIY projects, it’s a marketplace for creativity. Sellers can showcase detailed product images, write descriptions, and interact directly with potential buyers.
📺 VTubers and Livestreamers - Video Wisent - Peertube
Video Wisent is a PeerTube-powered platform for uploading videos and hosting livestreams. It offers creators more control and freedom over their content, free from intrusive ads or restrictive algorithms, whether you’re streaming gaming sessions, hosting talk shows, or sharing creative tutorials.
📸 Photographers - Photogenic Giraffe - Vernissage
Photogenic Giraffe is a photography-focused service for sharing and discovering stunning images. It’s built for photographers who want their work seen without algorithmic noise. From furdances and meetup to furtoshoots, the platform preserves image quality and allows for detailed metadata, so your work is presented exactly as intended.
For 3D artists, Pixelfur, Hoarding Badger, or both can be used depending on whether they want to showcase their work, sell it, or do a mix of both.
🚀 Future Plans
- Distinct 3D-Rendering Service
- Goldfish: Shorts, similar to TikTok
- No specific service yet, but something for link-card and gallery pages
🧩 Explanation
While the provided services cover a wide range, they don’t fully support the entire fediverse spectrum just yet. Here’s an overview:
Service | Self-Federating | Federating with Other Services | Relay Support |
---|---|---|---|
Pixelfur | yes | yes | no |
Sonic Orca | yes | no | no |
Hoarding Badger | yes | yes | no |
What does each mean?
- Self-federating: These services work with others of the same kind. For example, you can listen to music from one Funkwhale instance on another Funkwhale instance.
- Federating with other services: You can follow accounts from other services. For instance, you can follow a Pixelfed account from a Mastodon instance.
- Relay support: If this works, the public timeline is synced. You won’t need to follow someone for your posts to be visible across the entire fediverse (or at least all other instances that are also in the relay).
⚠️ Caveats
I want to be transparent. As long as relay support isn’t functioning for Pixelfur and Sonic Orca, this remains a beta test. For posts to be publicly visible, this feature needs to be implemented by the developers. Unfortunately, it’s not within my control—I’ll have to wait for them to make it happen.
For Hoarding Badger, relay support might not be important as you usually advertise objects uploaded on it differently.
